In “New Star Soccer 4,” the first thing you are going to want to do is to design your player. Height, weight, age, hair color, soccer position, and soccer abilities are things you can decide about your player. Depending upon the height and weight of your player, certain things such as strength and acceleration will be limited. To begin the game, your player only has a certain amount of points that can be used for soccer abilities, so you will have to decide which abilities are the most important and build on your player from there.
As the game progresses, you will work on getting better soccer abilities through soccer drills, scrimmages, and training with things like jump ropes or weights. You will also work on your relationships with family members, friends, the media, your team, your coach, your fans, your sponsors, and your girlfriend (when you get one). For most of the people, building on the relationship is done through spending time with these people, but for others, you build a better relationship with them through praising them. There are also opportunities for you to buy items like a jump rope, a treadmill, or even as you gain more money, a house. You can also try your hand at gambling through the casino or the horse track. You only have a certain amount of money, a certain amount of free time, and a certain amount of energy, so you have to pick what’s the most important.
As “New Star Soccer 4” progresses, your team will participate in real soccer games. This is your opportunity to show that your player has perfected his soccer skills. Before you get to this point in the game, it is important that you understand how to control your player. This can be done with your keyboard, with your mouse, or with a combination of both. Even though the tutorial will explain how to do things such as shoot and pass, things like slide tackling and heading the ball will take practice to figure out. I couldn’t find slide tackling explained anywhere in the game, but if you press the pass and lob buttons at the same times as you are running at the player with the ball, you should be able to slide tackle him.
I would say that one of the greatest weaknesses of this game is that it runs pretty slowly. The graphics are also not that great. The music is annoying. It can be frustrating to try to figure out the game. Yet if you can go beyond all that, “New Star Soccer 4” can be an enjoyable and almost addicting game even if it’s only addicting because your are determined to figure out how to play the game. I would not spend money to play this game, and overall I would give it a 3/5.
