Grand Theft Auto v Set for Release in September 2013

One of the most keenly-anticipated computer game sequels of all time, Grand Theft Auto V, is set for release in September 2013, according to an announcement from publisher, Rockstar Games. The announcement was actually made on Jan. 31, 2013, but given that the game’s release had previously been slated to be at least four months earlier, the recent confirmation that the launch was still on track for Sept. 17, 2013, was greeted with as much excitement from gamers as if it had been a brand new announcement.

Based upon violent criminals stealing cars and driving around fictional cities on crime sprees, Grand Theft Auto is a staggeringly successful game franchise which has redefined video games over the past decade. From its fairly humble origins as a top-down driving game, Grand Theft Auto III and its various expansions, such as Vice City and San Andreas (arguably better known than GTA3 itself), popularised an “open world” approach to game design, wherein players could choose whether to follow the game’s storyline missions or whether to just wander around the vast cityscapes, stealing cars, attempting side missions and generally causing mayhem.

With A-list voice talent, jet-black humour and a brutal aesthetic which has seen the series come under repeated attack from busybodies over its violent content, the Grand Theft Auto series has a huge fanbase and is widely seen as a benchmark against which many other games are judged. For this reason, and due to the fact that the launch is very close to the release of the eagerly-anticipated PS4 and slightly less eagerly-anticipated XBox One, gamers are speculating in frenzied excitement how the latest installment will push the envelope in terms of graphics, music, storyline and gameplay innovations.

What is known is that the game is vast; apparently larger than the game worlds of Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Red Dead: Redemption combined. Even the ocean floor around the fictional city of Los Santos has apparently been rendered in full and is technically explorable.

The story will follow the adventures of not a single criminal like GTA IV’s Niko Bellic, but three gangsters. Michael, Trevor and Franklin’s stories intersect throughout the storyline missions and players will be able to swap between the characters who have different special abilities. During gunfights, Michael will have the ability to enter “bullet time” as seen in the Max Payne games and Matrix films, while Franklin will have a similar ability while driving. Trevor will apparently have some sort of beserk rage mode, where he can both inflict and absorb enormous damage for a limited period, which isn’t what you tend to expect from chaps called Trevor.

With Rockstar claiming that the multiplayer element was a major focus for development in GTA V, fans are clamouring for the release of this exciting new game. From Sept. 17, 2013, the gaming community will be able to see whether it was worth the lengthy wait.
