How to Build a Horseshoe Pit

Building a perfect horseshoe pit will bring years of enjoyment. It’s a fun way to enjoy physical activity with family and friends. Once you’ve purchased a good set of horseshoes and you’ve played some games at your local park or friends’ homes, you’ll want to build your own horseshoe pit.

The location of your permanent horseshoe pit should be carefully considered. Young children could be at risk of serious injuries if they’re struck by a metal horseshoe. Sometimes, novice players have been known to throw some wild pitches now and then. You may want to consider installing a fence, approximately four feet high, around your horseshoe pit.

You need a grassy area, some lumber and some concrete. Your pitcher’s box must be 72inches by 72 inches. This area contains two different pitching platforms and the horseshoe pit itself. The pit should measure 3 feet by 3 feet. Your horseshoe area also needs to have a backboard.

The backboard can be constructed of wood. Fourteen inches is the recommended height for this necessity. Ideally, you will utilize reinforced concrete for your paved surfaces. They need to be at least 4 inches thick. Then you will fill your pit with either clay or sand.

You need to have at least 4 inches of either substance but no more than 8 inches of either one in your horseshoe pit. Both surfaces require constant maintenance in order for players to successfully pitch shoes.

You will also need two 36 inches by 1 inch rods. They need to be smooth. You do have some options here. Stakes can be made of iron, steel, soft metal or even synthetic material. You can also paint them. You will put them into the ground at an angle, approximately 12 degrees from vertical until 14 inches remains above the ground so that each stake is leaning towards the opposite one. It’s important to designate your foul lines. They’re placed at 27 feet and also at 37 feet from each stake. The shorter distance is used for children, women of all ages and men over 70 years of age. The longer distance is utilized by men 18-69 years of age.

You can build a nice horseshoe pit without worrying about building codes, complex engineering specifications and/or a gigantic budget. You can also add on extras to customize your pit to fit the design of your home, landscape and also your unique personality.
