Magic the Gathering Card Analysis Angelic Chorus

Angelic Chorus is a rare enchantment from the Urza’s Saga expansion set of magic the gathering, as well as being printed as a rare in the tenth edition core set of magic the gathering. It costs two white mana and three colorless mana to put it into play and it reads “whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, you gain life equal to its toughness.”

Life gain is an ability in magic the gathering that seems very powerful, but is not as strong as it appears. There are a few reasons for this but the most basic of them is that no amount of life gaining, baring cards that say otherwise, will allow you to win a game it only keeps you from losing, and since most decks grow every turn in the amount of damage that they can do there is sort of negative return.

The major advantage that Angelic chorus has over most other life gain spells is that it has a long term effect with only a single card. This helps limit the card advantage that you are giving to your opponent and generally eliminates it completely against red decks that use direct damage to hurt the opponent since they will have to use extra cards to kill you.

The major weakness of this card is that it costs five mana. The reason that this is so important is that by the fifth turn you will have already played out some if not most of the creatures that you can play in a game, and while angelic chorus can lengthen the game out some it is not so much that you can afford to ignore the fact that a great many decks will kill you by the sixth or seventh turn. This means that you can already be in quite a lot of trouble by the time that this card comes into play.

That is not to say that there are not some very valuable ways to use this card. It is in fact one of the easier cards to combo with, and using an ornithoptor, this and a way to bounce the 0 casting cost creature can gain you quite a lot of life quite quickly.

In limited games tend to go considerably longer and creatures tend to be bigger. This card gives you far more options in attacking while leaving yourself open to counter attack and that can be very useful.
