Magic the Gathering Card Analysis Strata Scythe

“Strata Scythe” is a colorless equipment artifact printed as a rare for the upcoming Magic the Gathering expansion set known as “Scars of Mirrodin” which is due to be released on October 1, 2010.  So far, Strata Scythe seems to be a rather interesting card to have provided that you are only playing one color for the most part.  In certain formats, Strata Scythe is incredibly useful to have.  With the right combination of cards on the battlefield, Strata Scythe can be extremely handy.  Once Scars of Mirrodin is released, Strata Scythe should be legal in the following formats: Standard, Extended, Scars of Mirrodin block, Legacy, Vintage, Freeform, Prismatic, Tribal Wars Classic, Classic, Singleton 100, Commander, and EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander).

The converted mana cost for Strata Scythe is three.  You will need three mana to play Strata Scythe from your hand onto the battlefield.  Also, you will need three mana to equip Strata Scythe onto a target creature provided that it has neither Shroud nor Protection from Artifacts.  Keep in mind that Strata Scythe is an artifact.  It means that Strata Scythe is susceptible to anything and everything that affects let alone targets artifacts.  Spells such as “Naturalize,” “Disenchant,” “Shatter” and so forth will pop off Strata Scythe and send it to the graveyard.

What does Strata Scythe do in the first place?

Strata Scythe is one of the cards that marks the return of the game play dynamic called Imprint.  In respects to Strata Scythe, you search your library for a land card.  Then, you Exile it.  Then, you shuffle your library.

The creature equipped with Strata Scythe gets +1/+1 for each land on the battlefield with the same name as the Exiled card.

If you Exiled “Hallowed Fountain” to Imprint onto Strata Scythe and there are six copies of it on the battlefield, the creature equipped would get +6/+6.

The ability of Strata Scythe is simply cut and dry for the most part.  But, there is an important question to be asked: How do you get the most out of Strata Scythe?

Exile a basic land to imprint onto the Strata Scythe.

You can get the most use out of Strata Scythe in Extended, Legacy, Singleton 100, and/or EDH.  In a black deck, for example, you can Imprint a Swamp.  Then, you play “Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth” to turn all lands into Swamps in addition to their other land types.  Thus, you dramatically increase the power and toughness of the equipped creature.

In certain formats, you could have two Strata Scythe cards.  Then, you use dual lands such as “Sacred Foundry,” “Overgrown Tomb,” “Breeding Pool,” and so forth.

Overall, Strata Scythe seems to be a rather handy card to have for the most part.  With the right deck, Strata Scythe becomes a great piece of equipment.
